
1. Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen (no dual citizenship for Military Skills applicants)
- Be between 18–22 years old (up to 26 years old with a tertiary qualification)
- Have successfully completed Grade 12 (Matric)
- Have no criminal record
- Meet the prescribed medical and physical fitness standards
- Be willing to undergo full military training
2. Available Programme
Most applicants apply through the:
Military Skills Development System (MSDS)
- A two-year training programme
- Training opportunities in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Military Health Services
- Monthly stipend provided during training
- Opportunity for permanent placement upon successful completion
Applications for MSDS typically open once per year.
3. Obtaining the Application Form
Application forms can be obtained by:
- Collecting them from the nearest SANDF recruitment office, military base, or Department of Defence office
- Downloading from the official Department of Defence website (when applications are open)
4. Required Supporting Documents
Applicants must submit certified copies of the following:
- South African ID document
- Matric certificate or latest academic results
- Tertiary qualification(s), if applicable
- Proof of residence
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) – optional but recommended
Applications must be submitted to:
- A designated recruitment office, or
- Via post/courier (if specified in the official advertisement)
5. Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will undergo:
- Psychometric and aptitude assessments
- Medical examination
- Physical fitness evaluation
- Interview and security clearance screening
6. Training and Benefits
Successful candidates will:
- Begin basic military training
- Receive a monthly allowance
- Be provided with accommodation, meals, and uniform
