How to Apply for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF)


1. Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen (no dual citizenship for Military Skills applicants)
  • Be between 18–22 years old (up to 26 years old with a tertiary qualification)
  • Have successfully completed Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Have no criminal record
  • Meet the prescribed medical and physical fitness standards
  • Be willing to undergo full military training

2. Available Programme

Most applicants apply through the:

Military Skills Development System (MSDS)

  • A two-year training programme
  • Training opportunities in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Military Health Services
  • Monthly stipend provided during training
  • Opportunity for permanent placement upon successful completion

Applications for MSDS typically open once per year.


3. Obtaining the Application Form

Application forms can be obtained by:

  • Collecting them from the nearest SANDF recruitment office, military base, or Department of Defence office
  • Downloading from the official Department of Defence website (when applications are open)

4. Required Supporting Documents

Applicants must submit certified copies of the following:

  • South African ID document
  • Matric certificate or latest academic results
  • Tertiary qualification(s), if applicable
  • Proof of residence
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) – optional but recommended

Applications must be submitted to:

  • A designated recruitment office, or
  • Via post/courier (if specified in the official advertisement)

5. Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will undergo:

  • Psychometric and aptitude assessments
